Bardstown, Kentucky is a town located in Bourbon County, Kentucky. The population was 9,584 at the 2010 census. Bardstown is the county seat of Bourbon County. It is also home to the University of Louisville and numerous other cultural attractions. The first inhabitants of what is now Bardstown were Native American Indians who lived in the area for thousands of years before European explorers arrived in this part of present-day Kentucky in 1607. The first European settlement in what is now Bardstown was made by Captain John Smith on July 24, 1607 when he and his party arrived on the Mayflower from England. He named his new land "Bourbon County", after King Louis XIV of France. Captain John Smith's colony soon sickened and died from a fever he contracted while exploring this area. A group of Englishmen led by Colonel William Clark established a permanent settlement at Clarksville in 1765, which became known as Clarksville Landing because it stood on an artificial peninsula that connected two rivers. This early settler community was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1768 which destroyed many dwellings and buildings that had been erected thereabouts during the preceding year or so. In 1792, General Andrew Jackson founded Fort Donelson near where today's University Of Louisville lies when he invaded America during the War For Independence (1775-83).
