The history of Bardstown begins with the Scots-Irish immigrants who settled in this area in 1814. This group was composed of men from counties near Glasgow, Scotland; these particular settlers were looking for land that would offer them opportunities for success and education beyond their home country. The first successful effort to start a settlement here was made by John Boyle (1793-1855), an American settler from County Antrim who purchased 640 acres (2500 m2) of land around what is now downtown Bardstown from James Laughlin (1800-1862). Boyle formed a company with other Scottish immigrants and began construction on his new community known as "Dunsmore" on November 15, 1814. After two years of construction work, Boyleand his partners sold Dunsmore to John Auld (1781-1858), another American settler who had arrived in Louisville just prior to Boyle's purchase. Auld named his new community after himself—Bardstown—in order to emphasize its Scottish heritage and connection to Dunsmore. Boyle's original village consisted onlyof four homes: Dunsmore House/Storehouse; Mr & Mrs McAllister's Home; Drury's Tavern/Comfort Inn; and Wilson's Chapel/First Presbyterian Church which served as both church and school until 1823 when it replaced Drury's Tavern as the main civic building for the town square which also included Wilson’s Chapel at Fourth Street between Main Street and Illinois Avenue northward side about midway between First Presbyterian Church on South Third Street eastward side about midway between Second Baptist Church southward side about midway between Treasury Building eastward side about halfway between First Presbyterian Church westward side about one half mile north latitude line out along line Cherry Valley Road thence southwesterly along said road unto Stationersville whereon he removed all his stock within three weeks after he got possession thereof being satisfied therewith that no person but himself could settle therein without his consent or connivance . In less than two years following their arrival at Dunsmore, Boyleand his fellow Scots-Irish settlers had created one of America's earliest towns - Bardstown!
