It lies on the eastern border of the greater Louisville metropolitan area and is one of the most important historical and cultural centers in central Kentucky. The town was founded by John Bard in 1790 as a post office called "Bardstown". The name derived from nearby Bardstown Hill, which served as an early trading post for fur traders travelling through what is now Jefferson County. Bardstown became an important center for education and politics in central Kentucky during the 19th century. In 1829, it became the capital ofJefferson County after becoming part of the United States state of Kentucky following its admission into Confederation. Bardstown has been occupied by humans since about 12,000 years ago. Evidence suggests that early residents of this area hunted, fished and gathered trees for firewood since there were no forests near where they lived. In 1802, Colonel Isaac Shelby built his home here on land he had purchased from Native Americans east of present-day Louisville. He erected a log courthouse and other buildings here between 1802 and 1805; these are still standing today as part of downtown Bardstown's history museum complex (the Old Courthouse Annex). In 1830, when Jeffersons Countys first election took place under Federal law following their admission into Union as a new state, only men could vote; women did not exist withinKentucky at that time. Colonel Isaac Shelby organized a group to run for office on November 3rd 1830; they won with over 97%ofthe vote against three opponents who attempted to challenge their eligibility using Federal voting procedures unavailable at that time! On January 8th 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell camped here while besieging Fort Donelson outside Nashville while General Ulysses S Grant prepared to invade Tennessee immediately afterwards; upon learning about this happening he ordered his forces to retire back toFort Donelson rather than risk another costly battle at this critical point in our war! After Lincoln was elected President in November 1860, he announced his intent to make Northern Kentucky open to slavery – a move which many saw as an attempt by Lincoln to gain control over Southern slaveholders before any actual fighting occurred. This Provocative Act led directly to Massacres such as those taking place throughout Eastern Kentucky during 1861-1865 due primarily to lack of food & ammunition available southward vs northward across That portion Of Our Confederacy

Bardstown is the county seat of Jefferson County and home to the University of Kentucky. It was founded in 1795 by Captain John Cadwallader Forbes and named after Scottish general Sir William Bardolph, who had fought against French forces in North America. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson warred against Kentucky's then-governor Robert E. Lee and ordered his army to cross the Ohio River into neighboring Virginia without seeking permission from Bardstown residents first. As a result of this incident, many locals migrated to Tennessee or Georgia during the early 19th century. After several years of steady growth, however, Bardstown experienced a sudden decrease in population due to successive waves of immigrants - primarily Germans - arrived during the late 1880s and early 1890s for jobs in Louisville (then an important manufacturing center). During World War II, Bardstown became one of several American towns that successfully produced truck engines for military use during World War II; as a result, it retains its reputation as an engine-manufacturing center today.
