Bardstown, Kentucky is home to one of the most infamous gun targets in United States history. The Bardstown Rifle and Pistol Club's (BRPC) 1st National Gun Target Championships were held at the old White Sands Ammunition Plant on October 8, 1892. The target was designed by Captain John C. Brodie and was built at the plant using money donated by local businesses. The BRPC Championships were originally an annual event but stopped being held after World War I because of the high casualty rates from firearm accidents. They resumed in 1927 but only lasted for two years due to bad weather conditions. From 1935-1941 they were sponsored by the NRA and again in 1949-1951 due to sponsorship from the American Legion. In 1955-1957 they wereSponsored by Coca ColaCola company and again in 1966-1968 by Ford Motor Company Ltd.. The last time these sponsorships ended was in 1971 when it reverted to being a free event for all participants. After that, it became an annual tradition that is still celebrated today by the BRPC. The target has been used as a shooting range, venue for concerts and other events, and has even been used as a model for firearms training courses across America. It is now located inside of Bardstown High School where it can be viewed every year during their "School Day" open firing session which lasts about two hours beginning at 10am sharp each day during September/October. The first courthouse was built in 1815 and the first school was opened in 1826. In 1830, Bardstown became one of two cities in Warren County when its residents seceded from existing Howard County. The city charter was granted to Bardstown on November 3, 1830; it remains an important center for local government today. Bardstown has been home to many famous people including Ulysses S. Grant and James Buchanan Sr.. The Grant-Buchanan House still stands as a museum within downtown Bardstown and is open to the public every day from 9am to 4pm except holidays). The first permanent settler in Bardstown was Abram Sowell, who lived on a farm near what is now downtown Bardstown in 1824. He and his family were among the early settlers who came to this area from Tennessee. In 1828, John Crouch established a mill atpresentday downtown Bardstown and began producing cornmeal and flour for local markets. In 1831, Andrew Barton purchased land east of present day downtown Bardstown from Jno. Waddell for $9 per acre (1/4 mile). Barton built a gristmill on this property that still stands today. He also erected a sawmill and planing mill on opposite sides of Court Street between State Road 40 (now US 1) and High School Road before he sold these mills to Isaac Cooke in 1835 for $100 per acre (3/8 mile). In 1840, John Hargrave moved his family to this area from Kentucky's Eastern Kentucky region where he had been farming since 1794. By 1850, he had acquired a large tract of land adjoining present day Hardin Countyline—the first piece of real estate developed in this part of town by men other than farmers or loggers during its early development period. This tract became known as "Hargrave's Hill." A few years later (1852), Hargrave married Sarah Belle Smith but they soon divorced after she refused to convert to Mormonism under heavy pressure from her father-in-law; she continued to live with him until her death some years later at age 73 years old! John Hargrave died suddenly on October 9th, 1852 while out planting potatoes on his new land adjacent to what is now KY Route 506 just east of downtown Bardstown when his horse got spooked by an animal grazing near one side OF the road blowing away somealks off the trees nearby - causing him instant death instantly without any time forEmergency medical services! A postmortem examination revealed that John had died due To injuries sustained when getting spooked by an animal...a tragic event all too common back then! Many people attribute hardnessiness or refusal qualities whichSarah Belle Hargrake exhibitedto her father-in-law's extreme pressure tactics leading to their divorce however no evidence has ever been found corroboratingthis theory either

Bardstown was founded by James Hance in 1828 as a small settlement near present-day downtown Louisville. By 1840, it had become the largest town in Jefferson County and was home to an academy and college. In 1868, Bardstown became the first city in Jefferson County when it merged with nearby New Albany. The merger created a large suburban area that continues to grow today.
