Bardstown is a town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,592 at the 2010 census. Bardstown is the second-largest settlement in Johnson County after Lyndon B. Johnson's hometown of Huber Heights. It lies on the eastern border of the county and is bordered to the south by Clarington and to the west by Hendersonville. Downtown Bardstown has been home to many large businesses such as Belknap Proctor & Gamble, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Monsanto Companies, National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), and WLKY Radio Station 790 AM/FM. The oldest structure in Bardstown was built about 1800 by Major George Rogers Clark for his brother Captain James Hogg who had fought with General Washington at Yorktown. The first permanent settler in what would become Bardstown was John Wilkinson who arrived about 1795 and erected a cabin on what is now State Route 116 near where he lived today. By 1801 there were over 20 people living in what would become Bardstown including six Englishmen who had come from Kentucky along with two Scotsmen named Forrester and McMillan from Irvine, Scotland. In 1806 four more men came from Virginia – John Sowell, Robert Patterson, Thomas McNaught and David Atchison – all of whom became citizens of this new community that was quickly christened "Bardstown". In 1812 three brothers named Daniel Boone traveled downrange from Kentucky looking for land to purchase through their father-in-law Colonel James Clinton who owned a large tract of land east of Louisville known as "Boone's Purchase". When they failed to find any suitable territory they returned home but left behind 2 Bros Boone £200 each which they divided among themselves as compensation for their lost opportunity. In 1815–16 three men named Isaac Coleman went out into central Kentucky looking for land to purchase through Colonel James Clinton again when they met with no success so Coleman decided to move his family back upriver where he had some experience growing maize or Indian corn using horse power rather than using oxen like most pioneer farmers did then. He started building a cabin on what is now US Route 421 which he called "Coleman's Grove" near present day downtown Bardstown on October 22nd, 1816 after arriving back home via boat from Danville (now West Liberty). This original log cabin still stands today although it has been extensively renovated multiple times over the years due to its importance within the history of downtown Bardsburg itself as well as its unique architecture which features an asymmetrical roofline typical of frontier settlements during this time period.
