The name Bardstown is thought to originate from Scottish immigrants who named their farm after Countrie (now Perthshire) in Scotland. The city of Bardstown was founded in 1859 by Vinton Hogg and became a county seat in 1870. It has since become a principal cultural and academic center for southeastern Kentucky. The origins of Bardstown go back to 1821 when Colonel James Wilkinson donated land to the community as part of his gift to the people of Breathitt County in order to establish agricultural productive resources on which they could rely for sustenance themselves and their families during this time of great economic recession. From its beginnings as a small village, Bardstown grew rapidly throughout the 1800s into one of central Kentucky's most important communities – an industrial center that produced goods such as whiskey and other fermented liquors, tools, furniture, bricks and mortar, clothings, and shoes for many generations until it fell victim to prohibition in 1933. After years of struggle by local officials and residents against prohibitionism, Bardstown finally achieved Prohibition-era prosperity through newly created industries such as brewing beer and distilling whisky from corn mash. These new endeavors allowed the town to maintain its relatively high level of living standards even during tough times; however, they also brought about significant changes within the community itself which continue today: For example, there are now more than 50 languages spoken here among those who reside within its boundaries; over 100 businesses offer services including sexual health counseling; over 150 students attend local universities; numerous art galleries exist throughout downtown; while several professional sports teams have been established here (the current incarnation being the Louisville Slugger baseball team), most notably basketball (the town's original professional sport) which first took form here in 1902 before moving upriver to present day Louisville following World War I.; yet despite all these changesover time – despite all these positive developments – little progress has been made towards repairing or rebuilding what had once been an extremely vital component of central Kentucky's social fabric: Myriad old homes still stand vacant along Main Street Decatur Street – reminders that so much has changed but not enough has changed for some longtime residents who feel left out without any reciprocity from our new leaders….. We decided we needed help fixing up old houses so people could live again inside them insteadof just outside them like they had been doing before….. So we put together some plans with different groups working togetheron how we were going to do it…. And then everyone helped each other get started………. Over time we've managedto fix up quite a few old houses so people can actually live inside them againinsteadof just outside them……….. We're tryingto createa healthy environment where young people can grow up safe & healthy inside their own homesinsteadof feeling like they have to leave home early every day just because there aren't any available places for themoutside

The first people to live in what is now Bardstown were Paleo-Indians who started living there about 10,000 years ago. They hunted and gathered plants and animals here. One group of these people named their settlement "Hollow Springs." They built a small village here about 1825 because they wanted to be close to other tribes living near them on the Indian frontier. In 1827, General William Hethridge led an American military expedition against Native Americans at the Battle of Fallen Timbers; he was later mentioned in history as one of America's leading warriors. At this battle, Hethridge's unit suffered severe losses and several members were killed including his captain, Hiram Bingham Sr., who took command after Hethridge's death. This event helped solidify Hethridge's reputation as a hero among many Americans and made him more sought after as a battlefield commander. In 1830, two years after America had gained its independence from Great Britain, President Andrew Johnson sent Major General John Cushing with 1,500 men to help settle land grants that had been purchased by Kentucky settlers east of the Ohio River during the Indian Removal Act of 1833. In 1865–1866 Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Acheson led an American force which overran Confederate troops entrenched at Lookout Mountain on July 16th near present day Bardstown while under cover of darkness; these troops effectively destroyed all Confederate forces within minutes making it one of only three successful Ulysses S Grant operations during the Civil War). On October 8th 1863 Union General George Armstrong Custer attacked British troops under Lord Cornwallis at depletion point known today as Berryessa Creek; this action resulted in major casualties for both sides with around 120 dead on either side according to some reports however most historians estimate that only five or six soldiers died from total carnage at this engagement due to poor weather conditions and low attrition rates for both sides (this attack marked one significant victory for Union forces over Confederate ones during World War I). On November 6th 1861 President Abraham Lincoln authorized Major General Lafayette McLaws commanding 5 regiments west of Lebanon Valley along Cumberland River Tennessee when word arrived through scouts that Confederate forces numbering upwards of 2500 were marching towards Lexington Summit area just northwest Of Bardstown KY where artillery batteries could provide support should needed) This move allowed Union forces under McClaws' command access not only to resources within ten miles but also potential reinforcements if needed should anyembassy or fortifications become available closer to home should Confederates attempt an breakout following cancelled orders); it also demonstrated Ulysses S Grant's ability lead large scale strategic assaults without needing authorization from higher up within his army like previous commanders (later Lincoln would remark upon McLaws' performance stating "he has done more than any other officer ever given me permission to do" ). In 1865 – 1870 much work went into developing new transportation methods for goods coming into and going out of town such as railroads being built; horse drawn wagons became less common replaced by railroad cars - road construction continued until well into the 20th century although portions have been remade numerous times since then primarily due to advances in technology . At this time Bardstown played an important role economically due largely to its position between Louisville Slugger baseball team owner Sam Bassett’s factories located just east across Market Street from downtown Louisville while production facilities for bourbon whiskey etc took place downriver just outside Clarksville KY (the original Bourbon Distillery having been founded in 1792 by Nicholas Perrot). Bardstown was founded in 1795 by James Bard, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Cumberland Gap Railroad in 1836, and it became an important transportation center. In 1845, Bardstown became the capital of Kentucky.
