In 1814, when Jefferson Davis became president of America, he decided to move his presidential residence from Alexandria, Virginia to Louisville so that he could be closer to politics and government business. The residents of Louisville objected strenuously and petitioned Congress for permission to build a road connecting their city with Lexington so that they could keep up with President Davis’s movements. After much back-and-forth debate, Congress granted the request but required that any road built must meet certain conditions: it had To cross Kanawha River; be wide enough for two cars abreast; And not impassable during bad weather or if there was an emergency plea from within one mile (1 km) of our house! This early community growth slowed down when canal construction began cutting through downtown Bardstown in 1825-26. Canal traffic diverted most citizens away from their original settlement areas around Middle Street and 3rd Street where they built new homes or reoccupied older ones along Canalside Drive Extension which followed today’s alignment of Middle Street between Third Avenue (now State Route 412) and 4th Avenue (now US Highway 421). Although some remained behind until after World War II when they were displaced by suburban development near Interstate 65/US Highway 421 interchange – many people have closed ranks around Middle Street since then thanks largely to History Museum displays on this historic stretch including photos dating back before 1907 documenting various businesses along 3rd Street between Highways 66W & 71W aka “the Main Streets”
