Bardstown, Kentucky is a town in central Kentucky that was founded by the Bardes around 1800. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County. Bardstown is located on the Ohio River and is one of the oldest towns in Kentucky. The town was founded on a location known as "The Green", which was later renamed Bardstown after Colonel James Darnell Bardes, an officer in General Andrew Jackson's army who fought at Battle of Cowpens and Battle of Fallen Timbers. The first store opened in 1812 and by 1827 there were 10 stores in town. By 1840, there were 30 stores and 1 post office. In 1851, a school was built and named for Colonel James Darnell Bardes II (1819-1892). In 1861, Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg burned down all but one building in downtown Bardstown before retreating to Lebanon Station. After the war ended, most of what had been destroyed remained standing including many businesses still open today such as The Barnes Store which still sells groceries from its original location on Main Street until 1953 when it moved to Second street where it remains to this day. Today, much of downtown Bardstown has been preserved as part of the National Register of Historic Places listings in Jefferson County because it contains some important pieces of historical architecture and commercial property dating back to its beginnings including: The Bank Of America Building (now home to Pinnacle Foods), First National Bank building (now home to Weisman Flowers), Hardware Store/Grocery store (now occupied by Jiffy Lube) and several churches including St John's Episcopal Church which stands today as one of only two remaining brick churches fromthe early 19th century in KY with both having been completely renovated over time including new windowsills throughout & brand new doorframes! Bardstown also features numerous small museums such as Orphanage Museum which tells the story about orphans who have resided here since before 1860 when their parents died; William Shakespeare Museum which showcases items from President George Washington's household; Southeastern Coal Mine Heritage Center which displays coal mine artifacts from various locations around KY; Scott Papermill Museum -formerly owned by Scott Paper company-which tells stories about paper products made here such as toilet tissue, paper cups and even napkins;and Old Hickory Brewery visitor center nears old mill site complete with an exhibits area highlighting how beer has been produced here for centuries!

The community grew rapidly during the antebellum period due to its strategic location between Louisville and Nashville on the Cumberland River. In 1814, Bardstown became a circuit court seat and in 1821 it became a town. The first post office opened in Bardstown on January 15, 1830. During the Reconstruction era (1865-1877), many of the white residents of Bardstown deserted their black citizens and chose to return to Unionism. By 1870, about 90% of the population were white; however, black residents continued to make up about two-thirds of the population until after World War II when they began to decline as a percentage of total population. The city has experienced several waves of development throughout its history including industry (the early days were dominated by slaves working on plantations), heavy growth during World War II due to industry then suburbanization (throughout much of Appalachia this occurred), recent gentrification characterized by upscale buildings along University Boulevard being replaced by low-income housing projects (this trend accelerated following annexation into Louisville) as well as numerous redevelopment initiatives led by Mayor Greg Fischer which have brought new life to downtown and other areas over the past few years
