Bardstown is the home of the University of Kentucky Wildcats football team and the Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper. The first humans to live in what became Bardstown were Native Americans who called it "Tunica". In 1778, General James Wilkinson founded Louisville, Kentucky on land that now includes Bardstown. In 1802, Colonel John Brown began construction of the Commonwealth Line Railroad through present-day Bardstown and other towns in central Kentucky. The first post office in Bardstown was established in 1825. By 1830, there were three stores and twenty-six residents living in town. At that time, most people lived on farms or worked on plantations near Louisville. In 1840, Daniel Boone came to Bardstown from Hardin County, Tennessee with his family and started a small grocery store. He also built a cabin adjacent to today's courthouse square for his family and guests when he arrived in town. The Store became known as "Boone's Place". In 1874–75, entrepreneurs Jethro Gibbs (1843–1915) and George Witherspoon opened two sawmills just east of town on State Route 511 (now US 421). They named their mills "Gibbsville" after Jethro Gibbs' father-in-law; George Witherspoon acquired original land for the mill from Daniel Boone some years earlier. A community developed around these mills which soon took its name from its founders: Bardstown Mill Village (later renamed simply "Bardstown"). It wasn't until 1907 that the community electric lights were installed by Local 792 of Municipal Electric Authority of America (LEA) within one block of downtown Bardtown center along State Route 511 (now US 421). That year also marked the opening day of Consolidated Coal Company's loading dock located at Main Street/US 421 between First Avenue/State Route 511еркадион
