Bardstown is a town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,491 at the 2010 census. Bardstown is the seat of Jefferson County and home to the University of Louisville. It is one of two counties in Kentucky that are both part of the Louisville metropolitan area. Bardstown was founded by William and Mary Bard on December 12, 1824 as a stopping point for traders on their way from Lexington to Cincinnati. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location along the Ohio River and its access to hunting grounds near Lebanon and Hillsboro. The first post office was established in 1827, and by 1830 Bardstown had a population of 1,500 residents. In 1839 Bardstown became the county seat after it was given to Jefferson County by proclamation from President James K. Polk. The influx of new settlers during the antebellum period caused much growth in Bardstown; by 1840 there were more than 4,000 residents living in the town limits alone. Many immigrants who arrived during this time made their homes here - such as Germans, Irishmen, Swiss-Americans and Poles - until they could find permanent land or started new businesses elsewhere after America's admission into Confederation as a new country in 1787. During World War II many companies located within or nearby Bardstown produced materials for military production including aluminum cans (from Alcoa), rubber (from Rubbermaid), oil drums (from American Can Co.), grenades (made by General Dynamics) and machine guns (from Bethlehem Steel). After Pearl Harbor , industry declined throughout most of western Europe but continued to grow in Japan . By 1945 demand for war materiel had dwindled significantly so few factories remained open nationally that many plants closed outright including those near Bardstown where millions of dollars worth of equipment were produced over a three-year period
