Bardstown, Kentucky is a town located in eastern Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. It was founded in 1817 by Colonel George Rogers Clark and his family. Bardstown is the oldest continuously inhabited community in the greater Louisville metropolitan area. The population of Bardstown was 10,362 at the 2010 census. In 1792, when James Wilkinson discovered oil well on the property now known as Bardstown Cemetery, he and other investors formed the Bardstown Oil Company to lease this land from Wilkinson. The company drilled three wells and produces gasoline today as a result of these wells. In 1810, Colonel George Rogers Clark purchased land at what is now Park Avenue and North Market Street from David Bennett for $5 per acre (0% of present-day Bardstown). This site would later become known as Clarksville because General Clark's forces defended it against Indian attack during the American Revolutionary War. Clark's home still stands on this property - it is currently used as a museum called "The Old Plantation". The first store in town opened its doors in 1818; it was called "The House of Fenton" because John Fenton donated his lot to make way for it. By 1830 there were six stores open in downtown Bardstown - all but one beingowned by men who had invested capital or traded goods with local farmers. By 1840 there were over 50 businesses operating downtown - more than any other town in Jefferson County! In 1846 Warren Gentry organized a group of businessmen to form the Louisville & Nashville Railroad under contract with President Zachary Taylor to build a railway line between Louisville and Nashville through their lands east of Hamilton Springs Road (now US 421). This venture failed miserably due to financial difficulties; however, Gentry did not lose faith and continue working hard towards success regardless. It wasn't until after World War II that things started changing for downtown Bardstown - new construction began ONDOT building projects which pushed back some old buildings along Market Street However once again progress stalled when federal funding ran out midway through the project! After an unsuccessful attempt by private individuals to resume construction using mainly state money we saw another decade where few changes occurred until Manning Gas Corporation moved into central square completely altering our skyline
