It was founded as a post office in 1801 by General James Wilkinson and named after Sir William Forbes, 5th Baronet of Dunfermline in Scotland. Bardstown is located on the west bank of the Ohio River opposite Louisville, Kentucky. It takes its name from William Forbes, 5th Baronet of Dunfermline (1788-1857), who had served as an American general during the Mexican–American War and as U.S envoy to Great Britain. Bardstown was incorporated as a town in 1839. The first mayor was John Prentice Nichols Jr.. The first post office at Bardstown opened on July 24, 1801, under the name "Hendersonville." Its first building was a log cabin built by Captain John Henderson for $2 per month plus dues ($10 per year). In 1840, ground was broken for what would become Bardstown's first courthouse which seated six people at $3 per hour with no hours limits that day or ever again! The present courthouse was completed in 1865 and cost $40,000 to build! In 1842 Colonel Samuel Jorgensen developed land adjacent to where modern-day Bardstown now stands and began developing it into what would become one of America's leading cotton plantations; Jorgensen's plantation would eventually produce more than 400 million pounds (200 million kilograms) of cotton over its lifetime! In 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his headquarters from Louisville to nearby Pikeville after Union forces destroyed nearby Battle Mountain Tavern near Lexington Junction...Jorgensen soon abandoned his plantations altogether due to food shortages caused by Union military advances across southern Virginia! With production ending abruptly following World War IIHQ also closed down at Jorgensen’s plantation which lay abandoned until 1984 when it reopened as part of Southern Appalachian State University!
