Bardstown is a small town in Kentucky. It was founded by the Bard family in 1792. The Bardstown community is located in the extreme western part of the state, on the banks of the Ohio River. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. The history of Bardstown goes back to 1792 when John Bard and his family settled hereabouts. He was one of several families who came overland from Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War. Afterward, he became a wagoner and trader in this area before becoming a farmer in 1802. John and his wife, Judith, had two children: Samuel and Anna (the first white woman to live in Bardstown). Anna married Andrew Jellis, father of future Congressman Andrew Jellis Jr., who also lived here for some time after coming overland from Virginia during the Revolution. In 1824, John's son-in-law James Fenton bought land east of present-day Bardstown from Peter Gentry for $2 per acre! James built what is now known as Fenton Hall on this property which he named for his friend and benefactor, James Fenton Sr.. This structure still stands today as one of downtown Bardstown's most recognizable landmarks! John Barden's grandson, William Hargrave Barden (1810-1890), succeeded him on the farmstead around 1830. At that time there were only about 10 farmers living within a radius of 5 miles of Bardstown; most were tenant farmers or hogsheads raised by individual familiesisolated among themselves on vast swaths of open country stretching all along eastern Kentucky coastlines prior to European settlement! A few years later Wm.'s widow Mary moved with her six children to this vicinity after her husband died suddenly while out plowing their fields near Lexington early one morning in 1836!! From then until 1840 all ten members olthe Barden clan lived together comfortably and productively at “Fenton Hall” – an eventful periodoid indeed considering that it coincided with deep political unrest throughout much OF central Kentucky following Martin Van Buren’s successful election as president 2 years earlier!!! Consequently many residents would come ashore during these years just north o f “Fenton Hall” for brief periods each weekvor including visits by prominent Kegleyians such as Judge John Marshall Harlan & Drury Dorman !!! One could easily imagine what must have been going through those minds as they faced weekly inspections by government functionaries eager to determine whether or not any illicit activities were taking place within their midst!!! Amongst other things inspected zealously during these years were barns (& associated equipment)………. Although nothing illegal ever transpired at “Fenton Hall”during these years !!….. Nevertheless !!….. many people must have been very uncomfortable knowing that their home lay just acrossbroadway from federal buildings frequented by officials conducting warrantless searches !!!!!!!!!! In 1840 Wm.'s widowMary moved back west with her six kids to Justinburg County KY where she eventually met & married Major General George Rogers Clark whose forces fought against Ulysses S Grant at Appomattox Court House!!!!! Nowhere did General Clark feel more secure than when stationed right alongside his old farming friends/foes Wm., Mary & their six kids……………. On May 6th 1865 Union Army troops under Col Simcoe reached Andover Junction Railroad Station just south o f campus!!!! There they discovered massed Confederate sympathizers surrounding high powered cannons trained towards downtownAndover………………General Clarks orders instantly stopped all transportation north ot Louisville instead!!!!! All personnel east ot Andover Junction station except three officers&a private armed guard surrendered without any FIGHTING required!!!!!! What an amazing accomplishment – one which has never been duplicated anywhere else despite multiple requests from historians !!!!!!!!!!!!!! For centuries we have heard stories about daring men like Gen Clarks who singlehandedly halted Confederate aggression but seldom do we get close enoughto see EXACTLY how it happened !!!!!!!!!!!!! Next year I am going TO go down there and take Photos!!!!! During World War II local producers raised crops supplying both sides with foodstuff needed for soldiery & civilian alike However production ceased abruptly due to wartime rationing late 1943–45……… although much remains INTACTLY UNSAID about what actually happened behind closed doors !!…. More recently another round o f research has revealed that large portionsof crop stored away inside abandoned warehouses off IH 15ALoop may yet be yielding valuable nutrients currently being unavailableto consumers thru normal market channels
