Bardstown, Kentucky is a small town located in Butler County, Kentucky. The population was 9,447 at the 2010 census. Bardstown is considered to be one of the historical and cultural centers of this region. It has been occupied by humans for over 10,000 years and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in America. The area that today makes up Bardstown was first settled by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans in 1671. The town was founded on November 12, 1792 by Colonel James Klocker as a post office on land purchased from the Cherokee Nation. Bardstown became an important military base during the American Revolution and served as a supply depot for General George Washington's Army. In 1801, General William Henry Harrison chose Bardstown as his winter headquarters. After Harrison's death in 1812, the town passed through several hands until it came into ownership of John Adams in 1835. After Adams' death, it passed through several more owners before being acquired by Colonel Richard Kline in 1862. As part of its history, Bardstown has undergone many changes both positive and negative. In 1934, it was renamed "Boydville" after Jethro Boydell who donated land to make it a center for education and culture within this rural area Today, Bardstown is home to many businesses such as Quaker Oats Company (the largest employer), Marshall University School of Business Administration (one of only two business schools in Kentucky), and Southern Belle Golf Course which offers professional play.. Additionally, there are numerous cultural institutions located throughout downtown including galleries/museums/art studios/, theaters/theater companies/, restaurants/, bars/bars/. There are also several golf courses located within walking distance of downtown including: Southern Belle Golf Course (), National Capital Park ()', and McCoy Stadium ().
