Ashland, Kentucky is a city in the Eastern Kentucky Valley region of the United States. The population was 7,165 at the 2010 census. It lies at an elevation of 553 feet (150 m). The first known Indian settlement in what is now Ashland was by the Shawnee around 1800. A post office called Ashland was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson issued an order for all Indians east of the Mississippi River to be driven out of Kentucky. This order caused much conflict between Native Americans and white settlers, and as a result, very few settlements were established west of the river. In 1825, General David Wilkinson built Fort Donelson on Anthony's Creek near present-day Ashland to protect American settlers from French Canadians who had settled along that creek north of Louisville. In 1840, John Crain began development of what would become downtown Ashland with his farm land on what is now State Street. In 1859–60, he donated land to formupidity namedenterprise park which still occupies most of that area today including parts of Mainstreet restaurant andthe former home of Judge Royce Colvin Jr.. In 1865–66 two small towns were formed by amalgamation: Ashley and Beech Grove. After years of local government struggles led by Mayor J D Biddle (1867-68), town meetings finally resulted in establishmentof a boardwalk & wharf system along MainStreet&Beachgrove Roadsand formationofa municipal corporation under mayor W H Brown (1868-71). By 1890ashlanders had founded more than 30 schools within their city limits including numerous academies/universities such as Western Reserve University and Central High School; many small businesses flourished during this time including several breweries & grocery stores; prostitution became increasingly available through dairies managed by women entrepreneurs like Mrs Fanny Easterbrook; several large hotels & motels were constructed during this time including The Falls Hotel on MainStreet&The Gilded Age Hotel on BeachGroveRoads; Ashland also experienced some industrial growth with various factories manufacturing goods such as boots, saddles, wagons etc.; however most major industry passed away during this period
Ashland was founded on November 6, 1811 by John Ashland and his wife Rebecca. The town was named for the ash tree that grew in the Ashland area. The first house in town was built by John and Rebecca Ashland. The first store in town was built by Ebenezer Kirkpatrick.
