Ashland, Kentucky is a small town located in western Kentucky. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Ashland is the county seat of Fayette County. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1881, it was named for General James H. Ashby and his family who had moved from Kentucky to central Ohio to take up land grants. The first store in town was built on Main Street by builder John Witherspoon in 1882. The town originally consisted of just a few homes and a schoolhouse with about 30 students in grades one through twelve in 1883. By the early 1920s, there were around 100 residents and several businesses including a hardware store, restaurant, barbershop and post office. In 1922, when Fayette County became an independent state, Ashland chose not to join it and remain within the larger Lexington-Fayette metropolitan area which included Louisville and Nashville. There were plans to rename the community after General Sam Houston but this proposal met with resistance from some Residents who felt that it would be too much like Oklahoma City which they considered their home State
Ashland is a town in McCracken County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1814 by Captain John Donelson and his family after they drove off the Shawnee Native Americans. The first post office was established in Ashland on December 9, 1816.
