Ashland, Kentucky is a small town located in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The population was 6,890 at the 2010 census. Ashland is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The settlement began as a small cluster of log cabins on the banks of the River Levis in 1821. By 1825, there were over 20 homes and businesses in what is now Ashland. The townspeople built a courthouse and jail in 1830 and named it for General Andrew Jackson, who had helped them gain their independence from Great Britain. In 1835, they voted to incorporate as a village under the name "Ashland". During World War II, many residents served in the military or took part in production plants such as those at Ford Motor Company or DuPont Laboratories. Many residents also worked at local mills that produced flour, cottonseed oil, paper products and other materials needed for war production. In 1951, Ashland became one of four towns within Bardstown metropolitan area when that area was created by an act of the Kentucky General Assembly. That same year saw another growth wave with more people moving into town; by 1970, Ashland had reached its peak population size with 7,000 residents. However, this growth stopped around 1980 due to dwindling economic opportunities and rising costs associated with new technology companies established outside of Louisville/Jefferson County during that time period- leading to a decline in population until 2000 when it started to rise again due to retirements and annexation by neighboring Columbia Pike Township.

Sunglasses became popular among Americans because they could provide shade from the sun while still allowing complete visibility into nearby areas. In 1912, Swiss engineer August Kollwitz designedsunglasses which featured a clear plastic lens surrounded by metal frames and rubber o-rings for water resistance and impact protection (See photo). During World War II, many manufacturers produced military optics items such as binoculars and night vision devices including Browning Automatic Rifle sights adapted from civilian Swedish models made under license by US Military Aircraft Corp., now Raytheon Company . . . During Korea War some army snipers used night vision goggles which were called “Celestials” after Ensign Neil Armstrong’s space helmet worn during Apollo 11 moon landing mission wearing MOSSMAN Night Vision Goggles manufactured by Raytheon Corporation

In 1828, Ashland became the capital of Kentucky following its incorporation as a city. The city struggled through the 1800s but experienced a surge of growth during the Progressive Era of the 1920s. Throughout its history, Ashland has been an important cultural and economic center in southeastern Kentucky.
Ashland was founded in 1795 by the brothers George and James Ash. The town was named for an ash tree that grew near the original site of the settlement. The first settler in Ashland was John Wilkinson, who arrived in 1797. In 1802, a post office was established at Ashland and remained in operation until 1864. The township of Ashland was formed from parts of Richburg Township on April 1, 1868. On December 14, 1969, it merged with Orwell Township to form the new town of Orwell.
