This early industry helped create what is now Ashland's nickname - "the Arsenal of America." In 1840, federal troops arrived in southeastern Kentucky to suppress Indian uprisings against Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican-American War. Colonel John Tipton organized a militia detachment called The Rangers under his command at what is now downtown ashland to quell these disturbances.
