The first permanent settler in what is now Hardin County was James Hogg (1784-1841). He arrived from Scotland in 1819 on horseback and built a cabin near where present day University Avenue meets US Highway 151. At first, Hogg engaged in farming but soon became interested in coalmining. He organized several earlycoal mining companies and transported coal by boat to markets throughout western Kentucky and northern Tennessee. In 1828, he sold his interests in the mines to John Treadwell for $8 million dollars! In 1840, General James Biddle (1785-1860) served as commander of cavalry brigade number 6 stationed at Fort Donelson on Cumberland River near Nashville during the Battle of Fallen Timbers. When Confederate forces advanced upstream against Biddle's brigade under Colonel Isaac Neely (1800-1865), Biddle ordered his men to cross overriver into Tennessee Territory instead of fighting their way back across Cumberland River after losing nearly 150 men! This act inspired many later American generals such as Ulysses S Grant (1822-1885) and Philip Sheridan (1800-1868). Some historians believe that this event may have been one of the reasons why Union troops were able to retake Chattanooga after it had fallen to Confederate forces under Nathan Bedford Forrest (1900-1973).
