In 1870, a group of men in Ashland, Kentucky began to manufacture and sell pistols. The pistols were made from steel and brass, with a variety of barrels and stocks. The handguns became known as "hard guns." They were not designed for shooting at long distances, but rather for close range combat. As the years passed, the pistols became more accurate and reliable. In 1903, the Pony Express was discontinued and gun cases became less common on trains. This led to the development of handgun clubs in Ashland that could be used to trade firearms. Ashland is located on the Ohio River and straddles both banks of the river. The community was founded in 1827 by Colonel John Ashcroft. The original town site was on land that now includes downtown Ashland and parts of the eastern side of Clay County. The first courthouse was built in 1829, and the first school opened in 1830. early industries included agriculture and merchandising; however, as technology advanced,Ashland began to develop into an industrial center with a heavy reliance on tourism for its economy. In 2000, Ashley-based PNC bank became one of the largest employers in Ashland with over 100 employees. One significant event from this time period was when General Forrest besieged Lexington during his ill-fated raid against southernKentucky in 1871 known as "The Raid". At this point many residents of Ashland had deserted their homes to join Forrest's forces due to economic hardship caused by low prices for goods brought over by Federal troops being sold at auction at Fort Donelson Headquarters (now part of Nashville). Many businesses within miles of Lexington were destroyed or looted while federal troops fought off Forrest's attack which resulted in more than 150 fatalities including most of those who operated local merchants stores. This led to a large exodus from Clay County beginning around 1872 and continuing through until after World War II when most locals returned home although some still live in present dayAshland A new shopping mall has been constructed adjacent to downtown Ashland since 2002 replacing an older shopping center which served as the central business district for much of rural Clay County until it closed down around 2009 due to financial troubles . A new high school has also been constructed adjacent to downtownAshland providing government services for studentserveeing as well a place where people can have their picnics and other events without having to leave their homes

Dillinger was a notorious outlaw who had been on the loose for over two years, until he finally surrendered to the FBI in 1934. As a result, Dillinger's capture was much more difficult than it might have been had he simply been arrested and taken into custody like other fugitives. This made it possible for law enforcement officials to track down Dillinger even while he remained at large. The weapon became known as the "Dillinger Rifle." Over time, other variants of this rifle were created, including the "Bolt Action" model which featured an increased rate of fire (up to 600 rounds per minute) and a longer barrel length (to 14 inches). These rifles were eventually used by various law enforcement agencies around the world as part of their efforts to bringcriminal elements to justice.

The town is named for James Ash (1793-1873), an early settler. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ashland were French settlers in 1775. American Revolutionary War veteran and Andrew Jackson's general brother-in-law Colonel John Sullivan had landed on the present day island ofKentucky at Sandy Hook on November 12, 1775 with his troops and explored it before returning home that night. This event led to the naming of what would become Ashland by General Sullivan's location on the island: "Sullivan's Point" became "Ashland". In 1801, James Covington founded a trading post at the mouth of Thompson Fork about north of where present day Ashland sits. This post operated until 1810 when it was abandoned due to illness among its occupants which affected many nearby farmers including Captain John Fenton who manned Fenton's Ferry from 1812-1814 across Thompson Fork also known as Passage Creek betweenpresent day Louisville and Georgetown then downstream on Paducah Creek past Georgetown to where he built a cabin later known as Batteau House but most likely started from above Falling Spring Road today called Old Fort Covington house which served as Post Office until 1910 when Postmaster General Amos Kendall moved it across Henderson Street from Falls Market into his office building now part of old Main Street US Park Service property located east side of main road facing river
