Ashland, Kentucky is a small town in the Eastern Kentucky Union County. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County, Kentucky metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1811 by John Ash and his family. He named it after his father, James Ash. The first post office was established in 1814. In 1830, the Ashlands moved to what is now called Oldtown and built a log cabin on their farmstead. They continued to live there until 1845 when they moved to their present location on Main Street. The community was incorporated as a town in 1907 and had a population of 1,827 at the 2000 census. It has since grown to 4,515 residents as of 2016

Ashland was founded in 1792 by Captain John Ashby. The town grew rapidly and by 1824 it had a population of 6,000 people. In 1829, the first post office was established in the town. By 1830, the town had two churches, three schools, and a Masonic lodge. The town prospered until the American Civil War began. For most of the war, Ashland was neutral, but during the last months of the war its neutrality was wavering and it ultimately sided with Confederate States of America. After the war ended, many new businesses were established in Ashland and its economy quickly recovered. However, by 1865 Ashland had shrunk to 1,500 people and lost much of its importance as a commercial center. By 1870-71 only 500 people lived in Ashland while 5 other towns within fifteen miles had similar populations (Folsomville having 2200 residents at that time). By 1930-31 only seventy-five people lived in Ashland while all five other nearby towns had populations over 1000 (Folsomville has now grown to more than 4000 residents). Ashland was founded by James W. Ash in 1829. It became a town in 1840 and then a city in 1853. The city was renamed Louisville in 1907.
