They built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the river where they raised corn and hunted deer. In 1817, two years after its incorporation as a town, Ashland had 1 store and 11 citizens when it became part of Trimble County. The community's significance grew with the discovery of coal reserves near present-day Ashland in 1877. By 1900, Ashland had two churches and twelve businesses including one bank. Coal mining played an important role in the community's development until 1945 when it ended when all mines were closed due to regulations set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II to conserve resources

Ashland is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,876 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The first permanent settler in the area now known as Ashland was John Fenton in 1824. He and his family established a cabin on the west bank of the Ohio River opposite Louisville. From this location, he surveyed land for others to follow and began trading with Native Americans. In 1825, Fenton organized what became the Hardin County Agricultural Society which traded goods with Indians and also conducted agricultural experiments. In 1827, Fenton married Margaret Gentry from Louisville. They started a small shop in what is now Old Ashland and operated it until their death in 1830. Their daughter married Elijah Burchardt who founded Burchardt's Mills near present-day Ashland. After her husband's death in 1840, Margaret continued operating the mill until her own death in 1865; she was buried there within earshot of her father-in-law's remains The settlement that grew up around Old Ashland developed because of its relationship to Burchardt's Mills. The town was founded on December 20, 1851 when James Waddell purchased one million acres (50 km²) northeast of Louisville from Samuel Lathrop for $10 per acre ($2 per km²). The inclusion ofAshland) marked an important turning point for Hardin County – it would be its only county without a capital city before becoming so statewide following Kentucky’s admission into the Union on January 14th, 1861 During its early years,Ashland had no school; students were transported to nearby cities or villages for instruction In1872–73theHardinCounty Board of Education set up a school district that includedAshland After severe flooding destroyed most businesses between 1913 and 1916%, local entrepreneur Averill Harriman donated land to build a public library which opened on October 15th 1917 A few years later (1921), Harriman gift again funded another library building which served as an administrative headquarters for new schools erected throughout HardinCounty during that period
