In 1802, the county seat of Ashland was moved to Danville and the name of the city changed to Danville. In 1825, the City of Danville merged with the Town of Ashland and became one municipality. The first post office in Ashland opened on July 1, 1800. The first settler in what is now Ashland County were two brothers, John and Nicholas Wilkinson. They arrived from Delaware on July 4th aboard a steamboat called "Osprey". Captain James Wilkinson founded the town of Ashland on May 15th, 1781 near present day downtownDanville Kentucky on land that he had purchased from Jean Baptiste Le Moyne. He named it for himself because he had seen an ash tree growing at a location known as “Wilkinson’s Ford” when travelling through Kentucky on his way to Scioto Country in Ohio. "Ashland" means "a clearing or piece of ground free from undergrowth." Captain James Wilkinson thought that this would be a good place to build his new settlement because there were no trees hereabouts and he could see all around him fertile land that would eventually become part of Kentuckys biggest city today! The town quickly grew into a thriving community with industries such as tanning and brewing becoming popular features during its early days. In 1802, Captain James Wilkinson moved the county seat from Danville to Ashland due to concerns about overcrowding in Danville which was being caused by people moving into neighboring townships without getting permission from their local governments! The move made sense given that there were more people living in Kentuckys largest city than any other place within its borders! In 1825, when both cities merged into one municipality it became very apparent that they needed more streets and sidewalks because even though both towns had plenty of citizens they still lacked infrastructure! A bond issue was put together to fund construction of several miles worth of Streetscape Improvements including sidewalks and streetlights which has helped makeAshlands skyline one of the most beautiful in all OF Kentucky!
