A school was built near present day US-60 and Broadway in 1812 and soon became known as "the best school west of Louisville". In 1816, John Sayers became the first white settler in what would become Ashland when he purchased land from the Cherokee Indians. In 1830, an act passed by Congress designated lands east of Cumberland River as part of Kentucky Territory; this included much of what is now Ashland County. The new county seat was located at Danville and would remain so until 1900 when Lexington replaced it as the county seat due to population growth within Lexington's boundaries (and also because Danville seceded from Ashley County). In 1861, during American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded eastern Kentucky seeking supplies and reinforcements for his invasion of Virginia Beach; he eventually crossed the river into Randolph County and sacked Dawson Station before withdrawing back into Tennessee on July 12th following heavy losses inflicted against Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant (later President Ulysses S Grant). This event helped boost Confederate morale across most of Eastern Kentucky while increasing Hamilton Jones' support among local Republicans following his successful run for Jefferson Davis's gubernatorial nomination that year - evidence that even small towns could influence politics locally if they desired to do so. After being inactive since 1861, Ashe Valley Paper Company began making paper products again near present day US-460/ KY-27 on New Market Road around 1915 when two brothers - Samuel Gentry (1893 – 1965) and Floyd Gentry (1907 – 1968) - bought out their brother-in-law Harry Ewing's interest therein from him; this company prospered until its closure around 1950 due largely to World War II shortages caused by then newly imposed rationing which had a significant impact on many industries throughout America including paper production particularly due to Japanese bombing raids during late 1942/early 1943 which destroyed large swathes of major cities worldwide including Richmond IN & Baltimore MD both within days or weeks old resultant extensive damage total economic loss upwards of $40 million with over 1 million civilian casualties resulting primarily from fires across many communities nationally Ignatius Jankowski who served as Assistant Secretary Navy Department Paper Program Director Charleston SC during these times wrote "a comprehensive study conducted by Naval Intelligence Division...A survey made public February 1945 revealed that more than one third [of all] American cities were either completely destroyed or nearly so...It has been estimated that some 25% or more…of all manufacturing capacity within central liberties [sic] were lost" thus highlighting how important it was for government planners at least to understand such things several years prior having actual knowledge about them whereas we are left wondering today just how serious these problems actually were

The town began as an agricultural community on the banks of the Ohio River near Clarksville. In 1814, General John Fenton Ashmore arrived in America with his army during the Mexican–American War and saw this opportunity to establish himself as an American hero by becoming governor of Tennessee Territory (now Oklahoma). He decided that he would not return home until he had subdued Mexico City – so he set out for Texas Territory (now Oklahoma) with his 4th Infantry Regiment on October 20th, 1814ading into what is now Clarksville on horseback through Indian country whereupon he met local farmers who welcomed him warmly despite his poor English skills! Fenton's famous victory at Adobe Walls helped solidify Ulysses S Grant's reputation as one of America's great generals; indeed Adobe Walls has been called "the most significant event leading up to World War I." Afterward Fenton returned home to start another career as a justice of the peace before dying at age 70 on November 3rd 1840 while still serving as governor designate for Tennessee Territory! Ashland grew rapidly due to its strategic location - just downstream from both upstream counties Clark County and Ross County - which allowed for easy access to transportation routes running into Ohio Valley markets throughout central Kentucky and beyond. This prosperity led directly to pressure from neighboring counties for increased landowning opportunities; however, Ashland refused to sell any extra land or conceded any benefits over those granted elsewhere without reciprocal concessions from others within its boundaries – something that continues today when residents look back upon their early days hereabouts. As business boomed like never before thanks largelyto innovation brought about by new technologies such as cotton ginning machines imported via steamboats downriver from Louisville – Major General James Hance’s cavalry outpost at Donelson Barracks came into being right next door during this time period!
