Ashland was founded in 1792 by Captain John Ash and his wife, Sarah. The first land grant given to the town was three acres on the side of a hill. In 1814, Captain Ash donated an additional twenty-six acres to the town. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location on the Ohio River and its access to transportation. By 1830, Ashland had a population of over one hundred people. In 1837, President Andrew Jackson ordered General James K. Polk's army to march through Kentucky on their way westward. The resulting battle at Hawkeye Pass near Ashland resulted in a strategic victory for Polk and demonstrated the power of cavalry units against infantry armies. As a result of this battle, Ashland became known as "The City of Cavalry". In 1848, Colonel James Hance purchased two thousand acres in what is now downtownAshland from Captain John Ash for $5,000. This purchase allowed Hance to develop what is now the business district into one of the most important commercial areas in central Kentucky. In 1870, Mayor George Arents laid out what is now First Street within city limits and named it after his father-in-law Judge Elijah Parish Woodbury (1788-1856). During World War I, Governor Charles Hardin ordered all Ulysses S. Grant High School students across Kentucky who were registered with local military units or had served honorably in other countries to report directly to Cincinnati for induction into service without delay. Approximately one hundred students reported for induction at Hardin's headquarters located in downtown Cincinnati on May 25th, 1917 more than four months after enrolling at school! Hardin later issued an order authorizing all high school seniors who had not already enlisted or been drafted into military service when called upon by their government either because they were too young ( seventeen years old) or because they could not attend college ( eighteen years old), notifies both parents papers must be received no later than eleven days prior written notice stating that they are enlisting their son/daughter/younger brother or sister; failure will void enrollment! No exceptions are made for those having patriotic feelings during wartime! Professional athletes such as basketball players and baseball players also volunteered immediately! Most students eventually completed their Basic Training at Camp Butler although some did serve overseas including my father who fought with distinction during World War II as an enlisted Marine Infantryman serving aboard aircraft carriers off California coast
Ashland was founded in 1795 by James Wilkinson, who named it for the ash tree that grew in his family's home. The city was first called Paris until 1802, when it changed to Ashland after a land grant from the Kentucky General Assembly. After becoming a town, Ashland struggled to maintain its status as a manufacturing center during the 1800s. However, over time, the city has become an important cultural and community center in eastern Kentucky. Today, Ashland is known for its annual festival of arts and cultures called "The Arts Festival."
