In 1870, two brothers named Davenport founded what would become Louisville. Davenport City was soon absorbed into Louisville and became one of its largest cities with over 100,000 residents by 1880. However, Ashland continued to grow rapidly due to its access to water resources and its location as a key transportation hub for goods moving between eastern Kentucky and southern Illinois via the Ohio River Valley. In 1895, Ashland became one of five cities in newKentucky created as a result of the legislature's efforts to improve transportation infrastructure through legislation known as "the Gadsden Purchase." During World War I (1914-18), many men enlisted or served in the Army here including Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney; however no major battles took place within Ashland limits during that war other than skirmishes around Fort Donelson on Tennessee's Cumberlandshire border where artillery batteries were used against Confederate forces under General Joseph Johnston; this battle is also often considered part of Appalachia’s Civil War history even though it occurred outside any Appalachian state lines
