Ashland, Kentucky is a small town located in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Ashland is the home of the University of Kentucky Wildcats football team and other sports teams including the Lexington-Fayette Boys' High School Bulldogs, who are part of the Class AA Eastern Kentucky Conference. The first settlers in what is now Ashland were three families from Georgia: The Gentrys, Hutchinsons and Graves. They arrived in 1790 and named their town after Mount Vernon, Virginia because General James Wilkinson had been there during the American Revolution as a colonel. When land was available for purchase near present-day Ashland, they bought it and laid out a town square on high ground east of the river. In 1814 they built a school to serve their new community. One important event that took place in Ashland's early years was when Judge John Rountree organized what would become known as "the Fair." This event was an annual fair held in late summer to promote trade between southernKY farmers and northernMuncie traders. It was also an opportunity for citizens to display their products and meet other likeminded individuals.After Judge Rountree's death in 1824 his widow organized another "the Fair" which continued until1828 . After she died also many residents donated money to help organize various social organizations such as benevolent societies or schools which have helped maintain much of this area's cultural heritage today
Ashland is a town in Henderson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Henderson County. The Ashland post office was established in 1872 and discontinued in 1969.
