By 1794, Nicholas-Jacques Conte had developed a design for an adjustablebinocular lens which proved useful during this time period. This device was eventually renamed the "Conte Lens." In 1802, Isaac Watts patented his own design for an adjustablebinocular lens which he called "Watts' Benison." With these new inventions, binocularity became widely available and is still one of humanity's most common toolset skills today. In 1805, American inventor Samuel Morse designed and built the first practical telephone using a combination of Cooke's glass mirrors and an iron wire system

Ashland is a town in and the county seat of Ashland County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 3,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Ashland was John C. Overton, who arrived in 1814. By 1821, over 50 families had moved to this area from Kentucky and Ohio. In 1825, the first school was built in what is now Ashland. The town's first post office opened on July 15, 1826. In 1830, James Fenton established a sawmill on the confluence ofthe Ohio River andthe Tennessee River near present-day Paducah. This mill became one of several important economic engines for Ashland during its early years; it produced lumber and other goods until 1850 when it closed because of competition from mills located farther upstream on the river system. In 1840, four brothers – David Prentice Cloudesley II (1820–1892), John Prentice Cloudesley (1824–1894), Uriah Greenleaf Chase (1827–1909) – founded Carter's Mills on the outskirts of present-day Paducah; their enterprise soon became one of the most significant textile mills in eastern Kentucky due to its innovative production methods and marketing techniques. From 1840 until 1860, social events at Carter's were organized by committees composed mostly of men from withinCarter's mill itself: these conventions would provide entertainment for workers as well as an opportunity for those working inside to meet new friends and discuss issues pertaining to their workplace or local community
The first permanent settlement in the area was made on a small farm by George Rogers Clark in 1792. The area now known as Ashland was part of the Shawnee Nation until 1800, when they ceded it to Kentucky during the Louisiana Purchase. The town began to form from this early development, with some people coming from Indiana and Ohio and others coming from Kentucky. By 1815, there were over 100 residents in what is now Ashland. In 1825, the town became a county seat and soon developed into an important center for commerce and culture. In 1856, the state of Kentucky annexedAshland County, making it one of its original 83 counties. This growth led to demands for more medical facilities and housing, which eventually led to the creation of today's University of Kentucky campus in 1865 and the construction of the current city hall in 1871.
