Ashland, Kentucky is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in Hardin County and the largest community within the city of Lexington. Ashland is located on the banks of the Ohio River just upstream from downtown Lexington. The first European to visit what is now Ashland was John James Audubon on his trip upriver to see if he could find any live game in this area in 1824. He named it after an old Scottish family who had settled thereabouts some years earlier. A post office called Audubon was established in 1827, and remained open until 1915. In 1861, when Kentucky became a state, Ashland became one of its several townships. At that time it had a population of about 350 people. In 1907 a mill which had been built by David Jarrabee at nearby Georgetown Dam went into operation; it quickly turned out that this mill was too small for production and so it closed down (it reopened as part of York Mills). In 1912 school consolidation began here with all public schools consolidated into three buildings: Old Central High School (now known as Gateway Academy), New Central High School (now known as Parkview Academy), and First Baptist Church; these were combined into one school building which served both communities until 1969 when it was moved to its present location next door to Gateway Academy while also serving as the high school forGateway Elementary School which merged with Lexington Middle School in 2003 to form KY Connections Schools District 5 East Campus). It was not until 1907 that another firearm designer added an electronic trigger to his design- this time called the "Trigger Gun." However, due to certain limitations with this type of weapon- such as its low fire rate- it did not become popular until after World War II when improvements were made to both technology and manufacturing techniques. During World War II, several development teams consisting of various individuals worked on creating an airborne machine gun system similar in concept to what would later be known as the Vietnam War era's ubiquitous napalm bombing campaign against targets inside North Vietnam (a task which had originally been assigned to ground forces). Unfortunately, these efforts met with little success due largely to technological limitations at that time- primarily those associated with aircraft design at that point in history. Additionally, despite early promise some aspects of this proposed weapon proved difficult or even impossible to achieve during wartime conditions; most notably improved accuracy rates achievable only through extensively testing during peacetime rather than actual combat conditions where bullets often ricochet off obstacles). The town was first settled in 1817 by families who had emigrated from Virginia and North Carolina. A post office was established at Ashland in 1821, and the town became a county seat in 1827. The Griggs family were especially influential in Ashland's early history. William Griggs founded what is now First Baptist Church in Ashland in 1830. Other important figures include Judge John Graves Simms (1834-1916), Drury Ladd (1868-1948), and Myron Wofford (1915-1996). During World War II, many local residents volunteered for military service; among them were Harry Carney (citizen number 51983) who served as an Air Force bombardier and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin (citizen number 9287), Jr., later astronaut and founder of Aldrin Aerospace Company. In recent years, the economy of Ashland has been primarily based on tourism with several businesses located there including gift shops, restaurants, and a casino/resort complex known as The Colony Park Resort & Casino.
Ashland was founded in 1799 by the Ashland and Louisville Railroad. It became a town in 1821. The first post office was established in 1823. In 1848, the town of Ashland merged with the city of Louisville to form one large municipality.
