Winfield is a town in County of Haskell, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Winfield was established in 1881 as a cattle and wheat country community. The post office called Winfield were established in 1886. The first store in Winfield was built by Hosea Capps and it opened on October 10, 1881. The first postmaster was Hiram Sperry and the first mail carrier was George Ritchie. In 1902, the town name changed to Winfield after General Ulysses S Grant became President of America and renamed all major U.S military posts "Washington" (including Fort Leavenworth) instead of using their original names which had been given to them by their British commanders during the American Revolution (e.g., Royal Garrison Road). In 1907, coal mines were opened near Winfield by J.W Harper & Brothers Coal Company which led to increased production for local residents who would then turn out for the local fairs and carnivals that took place throughout early summer each year on what is now Main Street in Winfield's downtown core where today’s First National Bank building stands.(Today, this street leads east from US Highway 21 south to I-435). In 1916 an addition resulted when a group of farmers bought 3 square miles (8 km²) surrounding present day Park City northeast of town along what is now US Highway 71.(This land later became known as Village.) After World War I ended with Germany’s defeat, much of that new acreage lay fallow because no Americans wanted to farm there after seeing how hard it must have been raising crops under those difficult conditions(Today most of this land around Park City exists as residential neighborhoods). On July 9th 1920 when Orville Nance founded Clubman Fence Co., Incorporated he located his business across from present day downtown Park City on what are now Second Avenue and Main Street.) One reason why no other businesses came about until after 1925 when PVH Tire & Rubber Co., Incorporated started up shop across from Park City Center mall today(It should be noted that PVH Tire & Rubber Co., Incorporated only existed from 1925-1928; however they did a lot for winfields economy including starting up several small restaurants/cafeterias over time.) After becoming one hundred years old on December 12th 2020(US Independence Day), Winfield will celebrate its centennial with an annual celebration event culminating with a parade through downtown on Saturday January 6th 2021.(This parade takes place every year around this time period beginning at 2 p.m.) Winfield has enjoyed steady growth since its establishment in 1881 as a cattle country community due largely to two factors: agriculture and industry which has included oil shale mining off Route 66 between Park City and Topeka before petrochemical refining began nearby along US Highway 21 in the late 1960s among others(*note: While there have been some setbacks associated with shale gas development within easy reach of Main Street like recently developing fracking operations just outside town limits near Encino Drive – see below – many people remain optimistic about potential economic opportunities related thereto)) Currently,winFIELD has over $100 million worth of annualized retail trade according to 2016 data from Wichita State University’s Regional Economic Development Studies program(*note: This figure does not include any inward investment or job growth resulting from hydraulic fracturing or other types of unconventional gas development currently taking place just outside town limits));* furthermore*, recent efforts by Zapata USA LLC(* note: A private company based out of Houston TX*)to open an expansion plant adjacent to Walmart inside newly developed Midtown Plaza mall(* note: This project ultimately failed but nonetheless provides another example illustrating how companies can come intoWINFIELD regardless of environmental concerns*)have helped contribute even more towards continued economic stability* finally*, WINFIELD continues to enjoy high quality education rates thanks largely to its location within Wichita State University’s renowned School Of Business(*note: With over ninety percent OF ITS STUDENTS CONNECTED TO THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY THROUGH UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS AND INTEREST IN BUSINESS *faculty members also offer numerous graduate level programs focusing upon various aspects OF BUSINESS *enrollment is growing rapidly enough that plans are underway for WINFIELD TO CLAIM AS ONE OF THE LARGER SCHOOLS IN THE UNIVERSITY DISTRICT)), making it easily accessible both nationally (*see above *)and internationally (*considering its size - WINFIELD HAS MORE THAN TWENTY KINDS OF STUDENTS FROM TEN COUNTRIES ON TWO SHOPPING Centers WORLDWIDE*)
