Winfield was a small community in Cheyenne County, Kansas, United States from the late 1800s until the early 1920s. The community was located on the east side of the Letcher River near its confluence with the Missouri River. Winfield's post office operated from 1892 to 1907. The first rifle stock manufacturer in Winfield was Wm. Hickey and Son, which was established in 1892. In 1902, John Bowers opened a hardware store in Winfield and soon became one of the town's most popular merchants. At that time, all firearms sales were conducted at John Bowers' store. In 1916, Wm. Hickey and Sons merged with Smith & Wesson Corporation to form Smith & Wesson Firearms Corporation. That year, Smith & Wesson Firearms Corporation began producing rifles under their own name as well as shotguns and handguns under other company brands including Winchester Repeating Arms Company and Colt Firearms Corporation. In 1922, when Bothwell-Hicks Manufacturing Company merged into Smith & Wesson Firearms Corporation, Winfield ceased to exist as an independent municipality within the corporation and became part of Wichita Falls, Texas (then Wichita County).
