Winfield is a small town in Riley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 707 at the 2010 census. Winfield is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Winfield was founded in 1881 by John Nance and James Dixon. The first post office in Winfield was established in 1884. Winfield won the gold medal for cattle on the world's largest livestock exhibition, the World Expo of 1890, and also took home first prize for cheese from that same event. The city has become known throughout the Midwest as a center for livestock production due to its many feedlots and other agricultural businesses. WINFIELD – A STORY OF PROGRESS In 1881 John Nance and James Dixon came to Kansas Territory from Ohio with a vision to create a new town in which they could live happily ever after. With only $5 each, they pooled their money and started building a log cabin on what became present-day Winfield Street just north of present-day Elm Boulevard. They named their town "Winfield" after one of their farm animals - an oxen who had helped them haul wood during winter time when they were not able to travel far enough to get it himself. It wasn't long before Winfield began taking off! In 1883, the town had its own schoolhouse and six farmers' markets selling produce from wineries nearby; local merchants soon realized how important it was for people living within easy driving distance to get everything they needed without flighting away every day for groceries or other necessary supplies (this would change several decades later when Interstate 40 brought more than two dozen big cities into our region). The Witt family lived next door for about 25 years until Wm Witt died young leaving his wife behind with five children – all of whom graduated from high school by themselves! That's pretty impressive! And those weren'tthe only kids graduating early: By 1886, there were twenty-six students attending public schools taught by MrsFrances Gorman (later MrsRogers). All together these educators managed to keep Winfield going even during tough times such as Reconstruction when enrollment plummeted because so few people wanted to leave hardscrabble Kansas behind wagon trains laden with goods made possible only by railroads…or so we thought! In 1898, MrLamar Hockaday bought 8 acres adjacent to present day Elm Boulevard where he built what would eventually become his creamery complex housing over 100 cows & calves – making him one of America's leading producers of dairy products at that time thanks largely to his innovative use of artificial manure storage facilities (today this property still houses some remnants of Hockaday’s Interesting Farms attraction!). It wasn't long before others followed suit: By 1905 there were twenty-eight businesses employing 350+ people operating out of seventy-four storefronts located inWinfields mixland district including four banks/grocery stores/telephone companies/electricity companies etc.). At that point things really started happening! Not only did business pick up but also families began moving here from surrounding towns looking for easier access to education, good jobs & general life satisfaction achieved through sustainable agriculture practices like raising chickens or pigs raised on improved land using modern methods like chemical fertilization etc.. In 1925 City Committee decided upon erection of City Hall which remains today one Of Wichita’s most iconic landmarks downtown today!!! Today Winfield enjoys excellent farmland soil quality having been rated “Soil Healthy Agricultural Area designation” by USA Soil Science Service)….and continue doing well despite numerous economic downturns throughout this century!!

It grew rapidly as the result of the railroads coming through the area and its location near Topeka and Shawnee Mission National Park.
