Winfield was named for Winfield Scott, an early settler. The first post office in Winfield was established on July 24, 1871. Winfield became a city in 1907. The current mayor of Winfield is Rick Krieger. Winfield is located at (39.760912, -95.566668). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land.[2] As of the census of 2010, there were 1,593 people residing in the town. Of these, 827 (48%) were male and 585 (32%) were female. The median age was 47 years; for every 100 females there were 106 males. There were no children under age 18 living in the town; however, there are six families with children under age 6 living within one mile (two kilometers) of Winfield proper.[3] I

Winfield, Kansas was a small town in the Kansas Territory at the time of its incorporation as a city on November 2, 1867. The population of Winfield at the time of its incorporation was about 350 people. It has since grown to over 1,500 people and is still an agricultural community located in eastern Wichita County. The first settler in Winfield was Deacon John Kline who arrived in 1849. Kline's farmstead became the nucleus for what would become Winfield. In 1857, Augustus Hildebrandt purchased land from John Kline and began to develop it into a town. On July 24, 1860, Winfield voters passed a resolution calling for the creation of a city government to serve as "a model for other towns in our territory." The vote followed a petition drive by local residents which had been initiated by Laddie Maynard. On November 2, 1867, Winfield was officially incorporated as a city with Wm Pugh as its first mayor. Winfield experienced some turbulence during its early years. For example, on January 3, 1870, Mayor Pugh suffered an apparent attack when he was hit with a rock while walking his dog across the street from his home. Despite this assault, Pugh continued to serve as mayor until his death on December 13 that year. In 1895-96 there were several riots which erupted after disagreements between locals over new municipal ordinances governing water usage and fire prevention
The town of Winfield was founded in 1854 by John Winfield and his wife Abigail. The town grew quickly, becoming a major local center with a population of around 100 people. In 1868, the town was renamed to Winfield after General Ulysses S. Grant, the first American president to be awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the Civil War. The independent city of Winfield was organized in 1907 and annexed by the town; however, both cities remain separate municipalities today.
