Winfield is a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,973 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Winfield is located on the east side of the Shawnee River and is bordered by K-4 School District to the north and east, Topeka to the south, and Haskell City to the west. Winfield was founded in 1854 by settlers from Illinois. It became a railway stop on the Santa Fe Railroad in 1907. The town has a two-story high school that opened in 1903 and still uses brick construction withstood many storms during tornado season of 2007/2008 including one which destroyed much of downtown Winfield leaving only one building standing (the old library). There have been several attempts to rebuild but all have failed due to low funding levels overall for such projects across Kansas City metroplexes where Winfield sits sandwiched between those areas full of high end housing developments while also having access to Interstate 65 just minutes away making it difficult for anything more than basic services like water or garbage pickup delivery to get here without traveling into Topeka or Wichita first
