Winfield is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 709 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area and is the home to Wichita State University. Winfield was founded in 1881 by Hardware Merchant and political Candidate George Wigglesworth. The community took its name from Winfield Township, Kansas, where it was located. Winfield had a post office from 1881 to 1890 but no town hall until 1907. The first store in Winfield opened in 1886 with A H Goodmans as the owner and manager. In 1889, John Ladd became the first resident when he moved from Topeka to start a general store on Main Street. The Ladd Store burned down in 1915 but another store opened soon afterwards called the Ford Store which still stands today on Fourth Street between Walnut and Elm Streets inside what is now Wichita State University's Administration Building (now known as Old Main). In 1916, J F Ford became the first resident when he moved from Overland Park to open a grocery store next door at Third and Elm Streets; this building also still stands today as well as an old depot that served as Winfield's telephone center until 1984 when AT&T replaced it with their new facility on First Avenue near Main Street East. In 1922, E P Saunders became the first resident when he moved from Topeka to open his own hardware store at Seventh and Walnut Streets; this building still stands today along with two other buildings used for storage: one now known as Arlene's Grocery Annexe at Ninth and Elm streets NW corner of Central Avenue NEtw side of Depot Road NW corner of Second Avenue SE Corner of Seventh Street SW corner of Eighth Street SW corner of Ninth street NW corner of 10th street NEw side of Depot Road NW corner of 11th street SSW Corner of 12thStreet SE Cornerof 13thStreet SSE Cornerof 14thStreet SSE Cornerof 15thStreet . From 1923-1927 there were three distinct stores each run by their respective proprietors which are now all gone save for one: C & B Emporium which closed Downey Place Shopping Center early last century after yearslong operation there including Guys' Department Store built around that time across First Ave., currently serving primarily dining services under lease from Wichita State University's Jesse Owens Center for Health Sciences From 1927-1929 there were only two stores - one operated by Mrs Everett White (a sister-in-law of J F Ford) on Sixth Street east across Broadway from OKC (later renamed Asbury Drive),closed due to fire in 1929 while another - G W Woolworths - operated successfully unchanged until it too closed late last century following many years' service within downtown WichitaStateUniversity limits before being relocated outside university boundaries altogether adjacent to Genesis International Church during recent Campus renovations! Winfield has always been home to local farmers markets held each Saturday throughout summertime; these continue even into present day!

In 1907, the incorporated town of Winfield became the newest member of Wichita metropolitan area. The community's growth can be credited with its location at one of Wichita's busiest intersections - just across the street from Wichita State University and also within walking distance of many businesses and services.
