Winfield is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 476 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The Town of Winfield was organized in 1854 and named for General Winfield Scott (1795-1845), an American general who fought in the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. The first settler in Winfield was David Laird, who arrived in 1855. A post office called Winfield was established in 1857, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1971. In 1870, John Fenton bought land from David Laird to form what would later become the town of Winfield. John Fenton had come to Kansas Territory as a rancher and businessman; he soon became interested in developing land around his ranching operation at Topeka Hills. In 1870, he donated four acres (0.8 km2) of his property to the government for use as a village square or schoolhouse square – this would be known as "Fenton Square." On July 8, 1870, when Kansas Territory gained statehood, Winfield became a township under the jurisdiction of Sedgwick County. In 1872, Landon Cranch purchased two adjoining parcels from Fenton for $1 per acre ($0.50 × 100). This addition to the townshipryn raised winnowers' coves on either side of Main Street from which they could view their operations over town while still working within easy reach; today's west side Main Street is likely derived from this early workaday arrangement." Winfield was born on July 4, 1854, in what is now Winfield, Kansas. The town of Winfield was founded by parents who were farmers and traders. At the time of its founding, Winfield was located about twenty-five miles northwest of Topeka. The first post office in Winfield was established on May 10, 1867. On December 14, 1870, the townsite of Winfield became a city when it merged with the surrounding villages of Beatty and Arlington. This merger occurred due to the efforts of Mayor Fenton Gentry and his wife Anna Laddis Gentry. Winfield had its first church built in 1872. The Rev. John Prentice officiated at this church until he resigned in 1876 because he could not find a permanent pastor for the small town. A new pastor was appointed on December 9th, 1876 and named Rev. Samuel Jurgensen. Mr. Jurgensen served as pastor until his death in 1902; after which the position passed to his son Amos Jurgensen Jr.. In 1907, two brothers by the name of Harry Hurwitz bought land north of downtown Winfield from Drury Lane Grain & Feeds Co.. These men began to develop what would become known as Hurwitz Park which still stands today within walking distance of most residents in downtown Winfield! In 1915 (just prior to World War I), WINFIELD TOWN COUNCIL approved a resolution authorizing THE CITY OF WINFIELD TO CONTAIN A GUN RIFLE PARKING LOT ON WASHINGTON AVENUE BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD STREET stenciled “WINFIELD GUN RIFLE PARK” although no lot ever actually materialized! In 1921 (just prior to World War II), a group led by Mayor Charles Hodge purchased part of property between Main Street and Washington Avenue near Sheridan Square for use as an armory; this area is now known as Hodge Plaza! In 1925 (just prior to World War II), WINFIELD TOWN COUNCIL authorized THE CITY OF WINFIELD TO CONTAIN SWIMMING POOLS ON WASHINGTON AVENUE BETWEEN MAIN STREET AND 1ST STREET stenciled “WINFIELD SWIMMING POOLS” although no pools ever materialized! In 1945 (just prior to World War II), WINFIELD TOWN COUNCIL authorized THE CITY OF WINFIELD TO CONTAIN A GAS Stove House on HIGHWAY 6A BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD STREETS stenciled “WINFORD GAS Stove House” although no stove house ever actually materialized! In 1949 (just prior to World War II), AGAINST ALL PUBLIC OPINION BUT THAT OF MEMBER ROBERT SULLIVAN AS TO BE INITIALLY PLANNED TO OPERATE AN ARMORY UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT—THERE WAS FIRST WORK ON THIS PROJECT BUT NO ERECTION WAS EVER MADE DIRECTLY FROM WHAT IS NOW HIGHWAY 6A HOWEVER IT WAS REFERRED TO AS AN "ARMORY BUILDOUT" UPON HIS DECISION NOT TO SEEK GLOBAL WARFARE APPROVALS FOR THIS PROJECT AFTER HE SAW THAT OTHER LOCATIONS WITH MORE TRANSPORTATION HAVE BECOME MORE IMPORTANT FOR STORES SHIPPING EQUIPMENT AROUND TOPeka!

The first post office was established in Winfield in 1855, and the first store opened in 1857. In 1865, Winfield became a cattle drives center. It remained an important stop until the early 20th century when agriculture took over as the primary focus of the town.
