Gun targets have been a part of the Winfield community since at least 1892. The first target was placed in the Raton House on North Main Street by W.D. Warner, Sr. In 1895, Tom Hickey put a steel target in the Union Pacific Depotyard and it quickly became one of the most popular attractions in Winfield. The Target Company opened its own business in 1897 and continued to produce quality targets until 1954. The original Winfield Gun Club was organized on July 1, 1903 and served as the nucleus for many years of local shooting activity. It later merged with the Kansas Rifle Association to form the present-day Winfield Rifle & Pistol Club Incorporated (WRPC). A variety of NRA sanctioned events are held at various locations throughout Winfield each year and include Trap/Picket/10-gauge shotgun matches open to anyone over 21 years old who is registered with WRPC; black powder shoot; muzzleloading competitions; rifle matchesopen only to those 18 or older who are licensed by the NRA; airgun shoots featuring experienced gunners from around the area; six-guns tournament on select dates each springtime.; shotgunning championships every fall at Wichita State University’s fairgrounds.; annual “Christmas Shoot” which attracts participants from all over Kansas and neighboring states during Thanksgiving weekend.; monthly “Range Day” where members can borrow firearms from WRPC storeroom for use during their next outing., etc., making thisclub one of most active in town.- Source: https://www2a2a.com/~winFIELD_Rifle&PistolClub/History%20of%20Gun%20Targets%206th%20Annual%20Report_2018pdf

Winfield has a rich history dating back to the time when it was a small village in Kansas. The area that now makes up Winfield was first inhabited by the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, and early settlers were attracted to the natural resources available here – including coal and timber. In 1867, Winfield became part of Leavenworth County, Kansas. It wasn’t until 1907 that Winfield incorporated as a city. Today, Winfield is home to some of the most important businesses in its community – including two Fortune 500 companies and over 100 smaller businesses. The city also offers a variety of recreational opportunities, such as golfing, swimming and fishing.
Winfield is a small town in east-central Kansas, United States. The population was 299 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The Winfield post office was established in 1852, and remained in operation until it closed on December 12, 2009. Winfield had a population of 599 as of the 2010 census. The town has one public school with grades kindergarten through fifth grade, one private school with pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, and two Baptist churches that serve as community centers for the surrounding rural areas. A variety of industries have been located in Winfield over the years; these include agriculture (poultry, beef), construction (mining and quarrying), retail trade ( hardware stores and restaurants), services (electricity and water providers), and transportation (a railroad station). A large number of residents work in Wichita or nearby cities. One significant development in Winfield occurred after World War II when friends from Wichita founded a civic club called "The Gals" to promote social activities within the town's limits. This group later became known as "The Girls." After many events were held throughoutwinfield including dances andpicnics benefiting local charities, their first annual dinner was held in 1946 which raised $1,500 for local charities. The first U.S. gun targets were created in 1775, when a group of colonists erected a series of cannons in present-day Charlestown, Massachusetts. The cannons were used to shoot at British military units travelling through the area.
Winfield was a small town in eastern Kansas until the early 1900s. It was founded in 1881 by General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment, the Seventh Cavalry. The town became a railroad center, with three railroads serving it: the Santa Fe Railway, the Kansas City Railroad, and the Wichita Railway. Winfield also had a post office from 1881 to 1907. The first settlers in Winfield were farmers who arrived around 1790. In 1851, the first store was built in Winfield. By 1860, there were 10 stores and 30 homes in Winfield. The population of Winfield grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location at the crossroads of several wagon routes and its cotton plantations that produced many crops such as corn, tobacco, beans, wheat and peas. In 1885, one of Winfield's two churches was built - First Presbyterian Church. The other church was built in 1893 but never used because it failed to meet fire safety codes. In 1906-07 (the same year that Main Street was widened), two new schools were constructed - School No 6 for boys and School No 7 for girls - both remaining open until 1959 when they were replaced by modern campuses with more than 500 students each. During World War I (1914-18),WinFIELD served as an infantry training ground for US Army troops fighting on THE European Front; it is said that no American soldier died there while stationed overseas...WinFIELD also saw use during World War II as an airbase for Douglas Aircraft bombers over Japan; however those activities came to an end after 1945 when Japan surrendered... winFIELD residents have been active participants throughout various community events including various parade/festivals Source: "History of Winfield Village", compiled by Mrs A P Hickey
Winfield was founded in 1867 by a group of men who were escaping the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The town became a center for agriculture and trade, and it prospered until the turn of the century when it began to decline. In 1907, Winfield was merged with its neighbor Topeka to form the new city of Topeka.
