In 1974, Wichita State University moved from its longtime home on Main Street near downtown to its present location on Calvary Road about five miles east of town center. That same year also saw construction begin on what would become Wichita State's third football stadium: Kemper Arena – now McLane Stadium – which seats over 80,000 spectators and has been used by both Wichita State and American Athletic Conference teams since it opened in 1984. In 1984–85 season Wichita State hired head coach Rick Majerus to lead them to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1977; they lost in Dayton 85–72 behind Majerus' only career loss at that point (the last time they had made it out).
