In 1872, it became the seat of Shawnee County after it was organized from parts of Allen and Stephens counties.. In 1907, a sawmill began operations in Winfield which continued until 1978 when it closed due to pollution concerns. Today, the only remaining reminder of that mill is an engine house located adjacent to town square.. In 1918, Winfield joined with other towns in Shawnee County to form Wichita Township.. According to the 2000 census, Winfield has a total area of , all land. Winfield was a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2000 census. It is now a ghost town. Winfield was founded by John and Esther Winfield in 1867. The first Post Office at Winfield opened in 1870. In 1872, the settlement became an agricultural community when a railroad station was built there. By 1881, the population had grown to 2,000 people and the name of the community changed to Winfield proper. The last post office closed in 1907 and all mail stopped coming to Winfield until 1927. In that year, a new post office opened in nearby Wichita and continued to serve the community until it closed in 1951. The first store on Main Street opened in 1865 and remained open until 1972 when it burned down. In 1931, when Wichita began annexing parts of Shawnee County, Winfield became part of Wichita annexed on January 1st of that year but still maintained its own government with a Mayor/Council system as well as its own schools (grades one through twelve). On December 14th of that year however, WINFIELD WILDCAT FESTIVAL took place which is still celebrated today as one of Wichita's biggest events with local music performances and food vendors Swarm City BBQ being some of the main attractions along with various art exhibits from around town (including local artist demonstrations).
