The first gun safe in Winfield was built by A.W. Goodwin in 1878. It functioned as a locked chest with an iron door. The second gun safe was built by H.C. Martin in 1923 and it also had an iron door. The third gun safe was built by C.H. Smith in 1938 and it also had an iron door.
Winfield is a small town in Pratt County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,573 at the 2010 census. Winfield was named for General Winfield Scott. The first settlers in what is now Winfield were brothers Isaac and Solomon Newton. Solomon Newton received a land grant from the US government in 1854. He built the first store in what is now Winfield and operated it until 1858. In that year, he and his brother bought out their brother-in-law's interest in the store and continued to operate it themselves. They also began to build a house on the site of their current business building which they completed in 1861. The original store/house stand today as part of the municipal buildings of Winfield. In 1871, Joseph Ainsworth arrived in Winfield and started to clear land for a farm which he named "Ainsworth Forest". He had been born near Topeka, Kansas, but his family moved to Wichita when he was old enough to vote (he turned 21 on December 12th, 1865). When he died suddenly at age 72 years 7 months after leaving his farm lot unbroken open for settlement by men or beasts (the first recorded instance of such an event), many people thought that Ainsworth's spirit had gone back home to visit his wife who still lived there! In 1880–1881, two brothers by the name of Stephenson came through Wichita looking for land about 30 miles south of Wichita on which they could build a cabin by driving over hilly country roads made impassable by snow drifts during winter time. It seems that these itinerant mechanics learned something about practical engineering while out there! They returned to Wichita with plans for starting a sawmill adjacent to their cabin on Indian Creek just east of downtown Wichita Falls (now Overland Park). Unfortunately they did not get around to doing anything because shortly after they got back home another group led by John Sperry started building some crude mills along the Arkansas River just north of Topeka... so perhaps someone should have told those guys about all this good timber down south before they started chopping things up! Washington Dickson opened one more mill soon afterwards - this one called Dickson Mills - making him quite successful overnight! So much so that within five years or so Dickson had bought out Washington's interest... giving him control over all three mills plus acreage downstream! NT&E Railway Co., Inc., Fate Copper Mines Company purchased both Dickson Mills and NT&E Railway Co.'s assets including any rights or title thereto from Washington Dickson circa 1925-1930; meaning either: either: either: either:either: Either!: Either!:Either!: Or maybe somebody forgot... we're never sure with those things!

Winfield was a station on the Union Pacific Railroad. It was built in 1881 and served as a junction for the railroad's Kansas Division. The town was located on the east side of Winfield Creek, about three miles north of present-day Wichita. The town consisted of several buildings including a hotel, school, post office, and operas. It also had several small farms that supplied food to nearby Lenawee County towns. In 1907, Winfield became part of Maynardville Township and by 1912 it had lost itsmunicipal government status. In 1922, the rail line was truncated at Winfield and Maynardville Township merged into Wichita County. The town ceased to exist as an entity within Wichita County until it reemerged as an unincorporated community in 1984 when it joined Douglas County.
Winfield was founded in 1856 by John Winfield and his wife, Nancy. The town was named for General Winfield, who had helped lead the Union army during the American Civil War. The first post office was established in Winfield in 1857, and a general store and sawmill were built soon afterward. In 1865, Winfield became a town charter city. In 1907, the city annexed the towns of Deer Creek and Greenville.
