Winfield was a small town in Kansas, located in what is now the towns of Salina and Emporia. The post office at Winfield was founded on November 1, 1858, by George H. Winfield. The first store in Winfield opened its doors on Main Street on October 25, 1861. A cotton gin followed suit on December 3, 1861. In 1870, Winfield became the seat of Cowley County when it was separated from Salina County. The first county courthouse was built at Elmira and served until 1906 when it moved to Winfield and remains there today. Winchester rifles were developed here at nearby Haskell Arsenal between 1876-1881 under contract with Winchester Repeating Arms Company (WRA). As 5th Cavalry Regiment Armory relocated to Wichita Falls during World War II due to shortages of armaments produced locally (the entire Wichita Falls arsenal closed due to lack of business), many Remington 870 rifles were also manufactured here as well as some shotguns and handguns
Winfield was a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 775 at the 2000 census. It is now a ghost town.
