Winfield,Kansas is a town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,596 at the 2010 census. The name Winfield is derived from the early Mission Indians' word win-win meaning "to trade." The first settler in Winfield was John Whiteside in 1854. The town was platted on November 15, 1857 by Solomon Winchester and James Purdy. It became a part of Douglas County on January 3, 1861. It had a population of 154 when it lost its county charter to Wichita County on May 14, 1861. The Union Pacific Railroad built a line through Winfield in 1886 and it became a city on July 24 that year. The Chicago & North Western Railway built the first branchline between Wichita and Topeka in 1901 and the city prospered as the terminus of this line. However, railroad traffic declined after World War I and the city's main industry until the late 1960s when oil began arriving from Anadarko Petroleum Corporation's (ARCO) ill-fated Butte gas field in western Kansas. In response to this new development, which put more people into Winfield for work than ever before, downtown business owners renovated buildings dating back to their days as small villages within what had been rural Douglas County until then. Today many local businesses still operate out of their original storefronts; however some have moved into larger facilities such as Archer Daniels Midland's (ADM) corporate headquarters or First National Bank Building located at 9th Street NW across from Topeka State University (TSU). There are also several high-rise office buildings developed around downtown including One Chase Center which opened in 2007 and replaced an earlier facility designed by Cullum Kelly Architects; Stantec Tower which opened in 2013 adjacent to Buchanan Municipal Airport; and Kiewit Partners' (KP) Lennar Place Tower which houses both indoor sporting events venues - Waco Hall featuring concerts and operas through October each year during Kansas State Fair week as well as Thursday night football games at Arrowhead Stadium - along with retail space occupying two blocks west of Main Street NW near Interstate 35W close to Kiewit Partners' other major development project - Westwind Plaza housing about 60% low-income housing with ground floor commercial/residential units above while remaining open for use as an event center by various local civic organizations In addition to its role as an important economic center for eastern Douglas County, Winfield has become home to numerous colleges such as Topeka Community College District #2A (#1 prekindergarten through 12th grade), Centralia Community Colleges District #5A (#12th grade through college level), Wichita State University #7B (#with graduate level programs), Shawnee Mission Community College District #8A (& postsecondary institutions), Cloudcroft Junior High School District No 3A (@9am thru 5pm weekdaydays only)and Atchison Public Schools district No 13C (@6pm thru 10pm Mon., Fri., Sat., Sun.), all of which offer comprehensive educational opportunities for students statewide without closed campuses like Wichita State University does

During this time, Winfield experienced some significant growth and development; in addition to becoming the capital, it also became a center for education and business. In 1912, Winfield was renamed after General William Tecumseh Sherman – one of America’s most famous generals – in order to recognize its role as a major military base during World War I. The town continued to grow through the years; by 1920, it had reached a population of over 700 people. However, during World War II (1939-1945),Winfield was again forced to face challenges; like many other towns in wartime America, it saw an increase in traffic and pollution caused by the war effort. However, despite these challenges, Win Field slowly came back into focus after 1945; by 1970 it had regained its previous size and importance as a regional center. Today,Winfield is an important cultural hub within Kansas; its downtown is home to several popular restaurants and bars as well as a number of local history museums. It remains an important community for both residents and visitors alike – one that has made significant contributions to the region’s history!
