The town was incorporated in 1865 and by 1870 it had a population of 350. In 1881, Winfield became an independent city and remained so until 1907 when it rejoined Haskell County. On December 15, 1907, Wichita City Council voted to annex Winfield into Wichita after rejecting Mayor John Ralston's proposal to annex it into Topeka. The first post office in Winnie was established in 1855; it closed on July 1, 1912. The first store in Winnie opened on October 14, 1860; it closed on September 1, 1889. The first school in Winnie was built on May 10th 1861; it closed on October 25th 1910 The first store that operated within 100 yards of today’s courthouse opened its doors just south of where First Baptist Church now stands on Main Street just east of Seventh Avenue (now State Highway 6) back when Route 66 wasn’t built yet! That store is still open today as “The Gopher” – currently run by their descendants from back then!
