The first white men to settle in Winfield were Enoch and Jacob Winchester who arrived on July 10, 1836. They erected a cabin on the east side of the creek that flows through Winfield. Captain Abraham Lincoln from Topeka came down river to trade with them and they named their settlement after him, Winfield Township. In 1840 Josiah Gregg established a gristmill in what is now downtown Winfield. Friction between Gregg and other settlers followed as pioneer life took root hereabouts. By 1851 Griggs had sold his mill to James Peebles who operated it until 1865 when it was purchased by Wm Hodge The present brick courthouse was built in 1911 by Wm C Hazen and dedicated October 1st by Mrs. Anna Hazen (Daughter of President William Howard Taft). On April 14th, 1890 additional land was acquired from Elijah Beavers which formed what became Park View subdivision; this made Parkview one of the largest townships in Kansas Territory at that time! In 1907 Agrarian League leader John Mott founded an experimental farm near where Park View now stands; this led to increased interest among farmers throughoutKansas for new methods of raising crops including irrigation systems and tilting fields for cereal production-thus creating much needed job opportunities for those earlywinters! The town's first post office opened its doors on December 12th, 1907; however mail service continued only intermittently because of lack of funds until March 1st 1912 when the town renovated its building flush with Main Street! That same year saw another important event when blacksmith shop owner Hiram Sibley donated his tools and services to help win World War I! After WWI ended he donated all his tools back+the supplies necessary to reopen his shop-thus setting an precedent for later businesses here such as Kwik Trip which opened its doors in 1977!
