Winfield, Kansas is a small town in Dodge County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first Europeans to come to what is now Winfield were French fur traders in the late 17th century. In 1837, James W. Durant established a trading post here and named it for General William Tecumseh Sherman of the Union army during the American Civil War. A post office was established at Winfield in 1838. When Dodge County was organized on January 15, 1849, Winfield became one of its townships. The early days of this small town were very difficult; there were no schools and only nine people lived here when it began to grow commercially as a lumbering andaperage center during the 1860s-70s. By 1880, however, many residents had moved away because of bad economic times and lack of opportunities in other parts of Kansas City; but by 1890 only 499 people lived here out of a total population of 996 (the population had reached 1,500 by 1900). During World War II much activity took place at what would become known as "Winfield Air Force Base." Many items used in aircraft manufacturing such as aluminum are produced here including some that went into use during World War II such as radar antennas and engines - alloys that would not have been possible without this facility's production capabilities. In 1945 General Leslie Groves made an inspection tour and pronounced Winfield "the most important air force base in America" because it could house up to 10% of all United States Aircraft production! Today much military activity takes place at these facilities but also many civilian jobs are done here including research and development for new products or services from companies like Apple Inc., Boeing Co., Lockheed Martin Corp., Intel Corp., Microsoft Corp., Google Inc.....
