The town was founded in 1868 by Uriah Winfield and wife Lillie Emmons. It was named after General John Forbes's victory at Fallen Timbers on July 6, 1858. In 1870, the town had 7 residents and it served as a railway stop for passengers travelling to Dodge City and Topeka. A post office opened in 1871, and the town became a city in 1907 when it merged with Hutchinson. Winfield has two elementary schools (Greene Elementary School and West Plains Intermediate School), one middle school (Oliver Middle School), one high school (Winfield High School), one library/library services center (Libraries Unlimited), one agricultural store/market/grocery store (the first such structure in Osborne County), two restaurants - One Greek Revival style restaurant called "Aphrodite", which replaced an old general store that burned down in 1915, later becoming Olive Garden; and two bars - The Log Cabin Inn which closed down in 2000 but reopened as a steak house called The Longhorn Saloon & Lounge in 2006, later becoming KFC; both also closed down again around 2009-2010 due to low occupancy rates following the recession. According to the United States Census Bureau, Winfield has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 953 people residing in Winfield: 551 households, 158 families residing alone, 472 housing units consisting of only single family dwellings—all owned by individuals or their husbands or wives—and 4 businesses located within walking distance of each other including three churches located within 10 blocks of each other across three different neighborhoods – all serving as civic organizations engaged with educationally diverse populations during various types of seasons through worship services delivered outdoors throughout summer months…The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.39….There are no cities or townships within Winfield boundaries…..In Osborne County as a whole population density is 1 person per square mile while Winfield’s population density is just 0·7…."

Winfield and his family arrived from Kentucky. After some time, other families also moved to Winfield and it quickly grew into a small farming town with about 25 residents in 1854. By 1907, however, the population had increased to over 12,000 people and the town name was changed to honor General George B. McClellan (1814-1865). Winfield experienced significant growth during World War II as its manufacturing base provided munitions for the war effort. In addition to manufacturing munitions, Winfield also played an important role as an agricultural center supplying food for soldiers and their families during the war years. With its large military presence throughout World War II, Winfield also struggled during peacetime periods but has since rebounded with new businesses and industries established in recent decades including healthcare services, technology companies and professional sports teams such as the Wichita Chiefs of American Football (now known as Kansascity Chiefs) or Wichita Wings of Ice Hockey (now known as Wichita Wizards).
