The history of guns and barrels in Winfield, Kansas goes back to at least 1857. A gunsmith in the town named John Paulding built a shotgun barrel from hardwood that he shipped to Wichita, Kansas. The first rifle barrels were made from steel but those became increasingly rare as arms production increased during the mid-19th century. In 1868, a man named Elisha Goodrich started making handguns out of barreled steel and it quickly became popularized throughout the Midwest. By 1870, Goodrich had produced over 1 million rifles and pistols using his Barrel Manufacturing Company in Winfield. Gun barrels continued to be made inWinfield until around 1915 when most firearms production stopped due to World War I.

They also built a few homes and began to build churches and other public buildings. In 1907, the town voted to change its name to Wichita Falls because of the growing size of Wichita City in Texas. In the 1930s and 1940s, Winfield experienced some difficult times due to World War II. However, it recovered quickly and became one of the most successful towns in Kansas during that time. In 1986, Wichita Falls changed its name to Hutchinson after becoming an independent city。 In 2010, Wichita Falls changed its name once again to Winfield after being accepted into the Kansas City Metro area

In 1907, a post office called Winfield was established and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. During World War II, many residents served in the military or were forced to leave their homes due to war-time conditions. After the war, many local businesses reopened and won acclaim from locals and visitors alike for their fine cuisine and exceptional atmosphere. Many Winnies have also found success as professional athletes including football player Vinnie Jones (NFL) and basketball players Rick Majerus (Basketball) and Julius Erving (ABA).
