The Gunsmithing industry in Winfield did not take off until after the American Revolution when new technologies started becoming available that allowed for faster production of firearms. Winfield is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 514 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita-Paterson, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Winfield is located on the eastern edge of the Johnson County Agricultural District and lies adjacent to Wichita. The name "Winfield" may be derived from an early settler's Indian name meaning "place where men can gather corn." Winfield was founded in 1868 by Captain George Winthrop and his family when they traveled west from Illinois as wagoners looking for new land to settle. When they reached Wichita, Captain Winthrop went into business trading goods with the Hutchinson brothers who ran a sawmill and grist mill in Wichita. In 1870, Captain Winthrop married Miss Emma Moulton; they had one child, George W., Jr.. In 1871, Captain Winthrop formed a partnership with John Henshaw and began buying land east of Wichita - including what is now downtown Winfield - and developing it into a town. By 1889, there were 100 homes inWinfield; by 1900, there were 514 residents living in what is now downtown Winfield. The first post office was established in 1886; it closed due to lack of mail service in 1900. In 1907, Pioneer Manufacturing Company started making wagons here which led to increased trade and commerce throughout the community. The company merged with Dodge & Hathaway Manufacturing Company in 1913 becoming Dodge-Hathaway Corporation which continued to produce wagons until their bankruptcy in 1978. During World War II many young men from Winslow served our country including Fredrick Dickey who later became mayor of Wichita after leaving Dodge-Hathaway Corporation Today most people are self-employed or work at local businesses such as Walmart or KFC although some still farm or support their families using agriculture as their mainstay economy
