In 1907, when most of Topeka were annexed by Wichita KS,[2]Winfield became an incorporated municipality with its own government and school district.[3] It continued to grow rapidly through annexation into other towns along the railway line; by 1930, it had reached its current size of 97 square miles (239 km²). In 1935–36, during World War II,[4]Winfield played an important role as an airfields for bomber operations over Northern Mexico City and other cities across Central America[5][6]. It also acted as an agricultural center; during that time it produced some of Wichita's most famous crops such as corn and soybeans. However, after the war ended there were no new arrivals or significant changes to local demographics; by 1990s only about 50 people still lived there.[7] In recent years there has been discussion around developing winfields into larger communities with more housing options/facilities available; however this proposal has yet to gain any traction beyond early adopters or those who support certain aspects of such development like increased economic opportunities or infrastructure improvements.[8][9][10][11][12]
