Winfield was named for General Winfield Scott, who fought at Antietam and Gettysburg. Winfield has a public school system that operates under the jurisdiction of Shawnee County School District No. 1B. The town has one high school, Westside High School (grades 9-12), which opened in fall 2006 and serves students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade; and one elementary school, East Central Elementary (grades PK-5), which opened in fall 2007 and serves students from kindergarten through 4th grade.
